Over the 5 years preceding the opening of TCF, we had discovered that our true passion as individuals, and even more so as a team, is in helping people with their own personal development and growth as well as contributing to making a significant change in their lives, physically and mentally.

Geoff has a background of many colors, working in different industries from property management (which included managing our national sports stadium and indoor sports arena) to teaching at-risk teenagers. He was a National Rep in Touch Rugby for New Zealand and the Cook Islands, took on roles as head coach, and has been involved with many sports teams as a fitness trainer.

Olivia has a good background and knowledge in the business industry. Her parents are successful and prominent retail business owners, building their businesses from scratch and always having their children involved in every aspect of running the business right from a young age. She also has a Bachelor in Commerce and Graduate Diploma in Finance, and obtained her Chartered Accountancy Certificate while working and studying with international accounting firm KPMG.

The big TCF Family

It wasn’t till the CrossFit Games (featured on ESPN) in 2012 that we caught on to CrossFit again. We were temporarily based in New Zealand at this time and so Geoff decided to pursue CrossFit training and see whether it was something that was for him…he got hooked immediately and we immediately started seeing the benefits of CrossFit for our people here in the Cook Islands.

Our NCD statistics here in the Cook Islands is extremely dissatisfactory, with a population of no more than 12,000 people (approx. 9,000 on the main island), we have an overweight rate of 88% and obesity rate of 64%.

In short our passion is to help our people make a change in their lives, for better health, fitness and overall wellbeing. We believe in CrossFit and believe it is the perfect vehicle to accomplish some great changes in the way our people live. Already we are humbled by the changes we are making in just a handful of people, and really that’s all thanks to just one day when we were sitting in front of the tv watching the CrossFit Games on ESPN.

Geoff Halston and Olivia Heather

Together we have coached and managed sports teams, taking one National Touch team to a World Cup in Scotland in 2011, where we placed 5th in the world. From this Geoff received the Coach of the Year Award and Olivia was nominated for the Sports Team Administrator Award.

We can go on about our achievements but ultimately these pathways in our lives has lead us to see where our true passions lie and that is in helping people achieve their goals and helping them with their own personal development in all aspects of their lives. We found that we got the most enjoyment out of the services we provided for free, a real aha moment for us, because if you enjoy something so much and are willing to do it for free then that’s where you should be focusing the majority of your energy.

During our preparations for the 2011 world cup Geoff introduced CrossFit inspired fitness training to our team. Our fitness levels improved significantly and rapidly, it was definitely an eye opener, however it was also an untapped area for us because there was no CrossFit affiliate here in the Cook Islands nor did we have good access to the internet to be able to research more into it.

“Little by Little We Build Our Power”

WOD in progress

Small steps is the key and our favorite quote is “Little by Little We Build Our Power”, speaks volumes on so many levels in life and has many meanings when you apply it to CrossFit and our mission to make a lasting change in our community.
